Chapter Thirteen

I gnawed on my lip as I sat in Cindy’s kitchen, staring at the card Jack had given me. My body had been so tired it had surrendered to sleep and I felt well rested. Some parts of the previous night felt like a hazy dream. Even though I was holding Jack’s card I couldn’t quite believe that he had asked me to spend a night with him. Was my mind playing tricks on me? Mark had been calling me all night, leaving me voicemail messages where he begged me to take him back. He promised me the world, but it was too late for that. I knew he couldn’t deliver on anything he promised and he wasn’t going to convince me otherwise. It still took a lot of willpower for me to ignore them though. I was so used to running back to him and making amends, trying to fix the broken relationship. It had taken me a long time to realize that I was the only one interested in fixing it though. All he wanted to do was convince me that I was in the wrong.

I was more concerned with my future. I suppose that one good thing about having formed few emotional attachments was that I had developed a talent for being cold and cutting away my feelings when they were causing me harm. There had been a point where I used to get attached to friends at the orphanage, or foster parents who took me in for a short while, but these periods always ended. The people always disappeared from my life and it became too arduous to hold onto my feelings for them. It was less painful to just harden my heart and move on with my life, although I dreaded the idea of going back home to collect my things. I decided to leave that particular task for another day as I wanted to put some distance between myself and Mark. I worried that if I was in that place again and saw him I might break down. It would be better if I had something else going on in my life, or if I knew that I had financial security elsewhere.

And that’s where Jack came in.

I dialed the number and felt my heart flutter as the phone rang. His deep mellifluous voice answered.

“Hey, Jack, it’s Sandi,” I said, wondering if he could hear the nervous tremors in my voice.

“Sandi, great, how are you doing? Are you feeling better after last night?”

“Yeah I am. I just… I wanted to discuss the proposal you made. I’m not ready to commit to it yet, but I would like to know more of what you have in mind.”

He agreed and asked me out for a drink. I hadn’t heard of the bar he suggested, but I assumed it was going to be something fancy considering his status in the world. Since I didn’t have any of my own clothes with me I borrowed something of Cindy’s; we were of a similar build, so while the dress wasn’t a perfect fit it was good enough.
