Revision of the 1990 Provisional Worship Book

However, the 1991 General Assembly referred the provisional book back to the Public Worship and Aids Committee for complete revision. At this Assembly a new committee was appointed and there was only one member of the old committee re-elected, the Rev. R. Humphreys. The previous convenor the Rev. Douglas Murray stated in the course of debate that he was prepared to be part of the new committee but not prepared to be its convenor. Unfortunately Douglas Murray was not elected onto the new committee. This came as an awful shock and Douglas Murray was deeply hurt.[4] In hindsight this was an ecclesial coup d’etat. The new committee held to a very different theological persuasion. The new committee’s convenor was the Rev. Paul Cooper.

It is from this point in time that a more radical form of liturgical minimisation began to be expressed in the work of the committee. The General Assembly also approved the following motion:

Request ministers, sessions, and presbyteries NOT to use or recommend the provisional Book of Common Order, known as “Worship” and refer the book back to the Committee for complete revision.[5]
