‘Sorry, mate,’ says Jamie, slipping into the seat opposite Huw. ‘I couldn’t get away. Clare wanted me to look at pushchairs with her.’ He rolls his eyes. ‘Do all babies need this amount of kit?’

Huw shrugs. ‘I’m not really the person to ask, am I?’

‘Guess not,’ Jamie replies, grinning. ‘Anyway, what’s so urgent it couldn’t wait until the weekend? I had to tell Clare I was popping out to see a client.’ He eyes Huw’s glass. ‘So, lemonade for me, or else. What are you drinking?’

Huw pauses. Meeting Jamie in the pub wasn’t the greatest idea he’s ever had, but he couldn’t think of where else to go. He and Clare didn’t exactly see eye to eye. Talk about temptation though. He’d just drunk half a pint of Coke and wished it was whiskey with every mouthful. ‘I’ll have another Coke,’ he replies pointedly.

Jamie’s lips quirk. ‘Blimey… things must be serious if you’re—’

‘Carys is back,’ interrupts Huw.

Jamie’s mouth forms her name but no sound comes out of it. He stares at Huw. ‘Since when?’

‘I have no idea. She just turned up at the house on Monday night.’

‘What house? You mean Clearwater?’

Huw nods.

‘Shit.’ Jamie thinks for a moment. ‘And what did she do? Did she speak to Lowri?’

‘No, but only because I happened to be outside when she showed up. If I hadn’t, then God only knows what she might have done.’

‘So Lowri has no idea who she is?’

‘No, and I aim to keep it that way. But, Jamie, you know Carys, if she’s back, she’s back for a reason. And whatever it is, it’s bad news.’

Jamie’s expression is grim. ‘So why now?’

Huw shrugs. ‘I wondered whether Clare might have—’

‘Well, she hasn’t. She hasn’t mentioned her, Huw. I’m pretty sure I’d know if they’d met up.’

Huw swallows. Jamie’s been his best mate for as long as he can remember, but there’s only so much he can ask of him. This is important, though, he needs to know. ‘Do you think you could maybe ask Clare—’

‘No! Come on, you’re not serious?’

‘You don’t have to be blatant about it,’ argues Huw. ‘Just say something like you thought you saw Carys the other day. See how Clare responds.’

Jamie is torn. ‘Mate, I really don’t need this. Clare’s two months away from giving birth and she doesn’t like you much as it is. Bringing up the subject of Carys again is asking for trouble.’

Huw regards him coldly. ‘You’re saying that like what happened with her was my fault.’

Jamie looks instantly contrite. ‘Sorry. I didn’t mean it like that, you know I didn’t, but Clare’s a bit emotional right now. She has a lot on her plate and Carys was her best friend. It’s tricky. I still think she misses her.’

Huw nods. ‘Okay.’ He runs a hand through his hair. ‘I understand, Jamie. I’m sorry, I should never have asked.’

But Jamie isn’t the kind of mate to do nothing. ‘I’ll keep my ears open, all right? I’m not promising anything, but if I get the opportunity, I’ll ask.
