Chapter 12 Day 6

The next morning when I wake up, Ember is gone. She must have slipped out sometime last night without me noticing. I get up and do some stretches, clearing her away from my mind as I get into the motions. I can’t afford any distractions today, not her, not Sam, not anything. The mission is all. But even with that thought I feel a pang of guilt about Sam. How am I going to tell him about Ember? Am I going to tell him? I should, and I know last night was wrong, but it seemed like an easy way to just banish him from me.

I get dressed and then head out of my room. When I go out into the hallway Ember is there, and for a moment we look at each other. I wonder if this is going to be awkward, but she brushes past me as she goes to the bathroom, as if nothing happened. Good. It was just a night’s passion anyway. Nothing more to it than that. There has to be nothing more to it than that.

I head upstairs and grab some breakfast, and then head into the conference room. Monica, for once, isn’t in a business power suit. Instead she’s wearing fatigues and body armor and has a pistol on her belt, and an assault rifle nearby. She looks more comfortable in her current gear than I’ve ever seen her in a power suit. It makes me wonder what she was really like before she got the job she’s in.

“I’m going to gear up,” I tell her.

“You’ve got a few minutes. Get to it!”

“Yes, Ma’am!”

I run over to the armory and slip on combat body armor. Today isn’t the day for stealth. I grab a pistol, a few grenades and an assault rifle, as well as extra ammo for the weapons, and head back to the conference room. Nearly everyone is there. A couple of the other analysts are already suited up while others still need to get their gear. If they were in the military they’d be doing pushups right now or cleaning something for not having their shit together, but Monica doesn’t really seem to care.

“After I finish this briefing you’ve got 10 minutes, and then we’re on the road,” She says. “Now we’ve got a two- hour drive and all of us are going, including me. We’re going to hit that place hard and we’re not taking any prisoners. You should expect some armed guards, automated defenses, and possibly zombies. Make sure you bring extra ammo. When we get to the facility we’ll scout the area and determine a plan of attack then. Now get your gear and get to the van, I’ll be driving the first one and I want Greg and Joanna with me.”

The analysts scramble, those of who are prepped go to the vans, while the rest rush to get their gear on. It’s sloppy and chaotic, but that’s a good thing in my mind, because it means that if I need to take these people out, it’ll be a lot easier.
