*********

As I sat in Alex's expansive living room, I wondered how I found myself in this situation; a week ago, I had to fight him for fixing an engagement party without letting me know first, but here I was, clad in a purple body-con dress for a party I wasn't even interested in the first place.

I finally agreed to this a few days back when I overheard Alex's conversation with Mr. Albert. He looked downtrodden–his mother had gone behind his back again. I instantly felt bad for him, coupled with the fact his grandmother seemed like a nice lady and didn't deserve to die without knowing her grandson found love in the end.

As usual, he was happy that I had accepted this.

“Hey, why are you here? My brother isn't around, but that doesn't mean you can't mingle with other people,” his sister teased as she held me by the arms.

I think mine would be the first party that the groom didn't attend, and honestly, at this point, I didn't mind. It made things much easier for me; my brother wouldn't get too suspicious.

“Weirdly, Alex would choose to go on an official business assignment instead of his engagement party,” Sitting there, one would think I missed Alex—-Maybe I did. I don't know, but it felt weird not hearing his annoying voice. For some bizarre reason, I felt safer whenever I was with him.

“You are acting like you don't know my brother. That's how he is. Always working,” she added, and I smiled. I was grateful for the fact that, unlike Alex's mean mother, she was different; even though she had barely met me, she could make me feel like part of the family already.

As I entered Alex's garden, where the party was to be held, I noticed it was filled with people I'd never met. I didn't understand who made this list.

I loved how beautiful the scenery was; he made sure the garden was decorated with all sorts of beautiful chandelier lights in all colors. There was a mini chocolate fountain. I was thrilled and confused at the same time. Alexander knew how much I loved chocolate.

“Jessica, I'm not seeing your brother. Why didn't he come?” Alex's mother walked up to me. She wore a red dress, which reminded me so much of Cinderella's wicked stepmother. It didn't help that she acted like one sometimes.

“He isn't here. He had an important trip to attend,” I lied, hoping she didn't see through my lies.

She walked me to the stage as she mounted it to give her speech. I prayed silently that she wouldn't say something demeaning about me or Alexander. His sister slipped her fingers into me, giving me a reassuring smile. They were used to their mother being mean most of the time.

Just as I was to hear her speak, my phone beeped. It was Alexander. I sighed as I wondered why he was calling at this crucial time.

“What is it, Alex?” I snapped as soon as I picked up his call.
