“You sold me out!”

Kit squinted, trying to make out the shapes of her fellow party members in the thick fog, but even her elf eyes couldn’t properly discern them. “I did not.”

“You did,” Riko said stubbornly. “How could you send me to the elves?”

“You’ve already asked me that at least a dozen times,” Kit said.

“Maybe if you gave me a satisfactory answer, I’d stop asking!”

“Look at it this way: at least you won’t have to deal with Long Claw anymore.” Kit wobbled for a moment when she leaped from one slick rock to the next, doing her best to perform a makeshift rendition of Battlefield March.

“I guess. But you sacrificed me—and why do I have to come alone? You could have made Prowl tag along at least.”

“I had to send you because getting Prowl anywhere near Lèas would be disastrous, and he’d likely get you all thrown out.”

“Yeah, that sounds about right.”

“Hold on one second.” Kit switched out of the private message and shouted, “Long Claw—don’t venture any farther away.” She studied her mini-map, where the dot that represented Long Claw skirted farther and farther away from the group.

“I say let him wander,” Noir grunted as he scrambled up Kit’s rock formation. “Serves him right if he gets himself killed.”

Kit twirled picturesquely, then nimbly leaped to another large boulder. “Maybe, but he’s great at tearing through the sea serpents, so I’d like to keep him going instead of wasting time waiting for him to respawn and rejoin us.” She lifted her right leg up behind her and held it there—almost touching the back of her skull—for a moment.

Fog blanketed the cove. Kit couldn’t even see the torches and fires of Kamoi, much less the ocean waters that writhed with sea serpents.

She could see the rock formation behind her and ahead of her, and the occasional sea serpent that twined around the rocks; otherwise, she mostly had to depend on her hearing—which was barely any better. Though she could hear splashes, all noise was muffled, and things seemed to echo oddly, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact location of her teammates.

“Maybe we should have waited for the fog to clear before we came out here,” Kit said.

Noir snorted as he frog-leaped to her boulder, clinging to the rock’s slick side. “Why would we do that? There are a lot of sea serpents, yeah, but they’re all lower-level. Trash Panda, come on,” he called, twisting back and holding out his arm. His racoon jumped and caught Noir’s arm, but the pet was so hefty, he nearly wrenched Noir off the large boulder.

“Yeah, but I still don’t like this weather. The fog seems…suffocating.” Kit tucked her chin as she again tried to listen for the other party members. She could hear Prowl grumbling as he fought on a sandbar just north of her, and Solus was always easy to tell with his pinpoint—and wordless—fighting precision.

“Good news, everyone!” Alistair whooped somewhere south. “Sea serpents can be ridden!”

Kit twirled in time to see the cavalry knight glide past on the back of a sea serpent.
