I feel relaxed as I watch the Level 4s compete. I threw my back handspring and even though I didn’t make it, I feel great that I did it in competition. I know I can do Level 6 this winter and it’s a wonderful feeling.

I clap as my sister walks out onto the floor and waits for her music. She has improved these last several weeks. It’s a big change from the Level 3 to the Level 4 floor routine and she did it. She practiced in the family room over and over again badgering me to watch and make sure she didn’t forget anything.

The music begins and she looks so cute out there, so serious for such a little kid. She does a beautiful first pass of front handspring and moves into her dance without expression. I look over at my parents; they are both holding up their phones. I assume one is recording and one is taking pictures.

I hear my teammates cheering and look back at the floor. Rose is about to do her last tumbling pass. Round-off back handspring back handspring is easy for her. She has had it forever and does it on the grass all the time.

“Come on Rose! You’ve got this!” I yell with my teammates.

The 4s cheer loudly as she finishes her routine and stands up and salutes the judge. As she runs off the floor I stand up to be the first one to give her a hug. Once I sit back down I realize it’s time for me to focus on my routine.

When I’m up I stand along the edge of the floor and wait for the judge. I look up and wave to my parents, which I would have never done before. This makes my teammates laugh. The judge salutes me, I salute back, and walk to my starting spot on the floor. All of a sudden I wish I was doing my Level 6 routine. It’s so much more fun and peppy. But then the familiar Level 5 music begins reminding me to focus on my Level 5 routine. I easily move to the music. I have done this routine a thousand times.

I do a clean first pass of front handspring, front handspring step-out. I smile to my parents from the corner as I do my dance poses. Then I run into my front tuck, easily stick it, smile at the judges, body wave, and go into a perfect back extension roll to a pike down. I do the splits sequence and try to make my arms and fingers as graceful as possible. I stand up, pose, throw out another grin, and do my leap pass. I try to get a good split and point my toes. It feels good, but hard to know for sure how split I got.

I execute a controlled full turn and when I finish I see Rose in my line of sight and I give her a smile. Then I dance into my corner for my last tumbling pass.
