GIL

Gil walked down the corridor leading away from the chamber she slept in, feeling refreshed and no longer sore. As they turned into another corridor, she realised 998 had altered some of its designs there as well. There was now a light display playing gently about her as she passed through. Multicoloured rays bounced harmlessly around her and gently fizzled in her ears with every step, warming her skin.

She smiled as 998 circled around her, before swiftly zooming off ahead to wait at the end of the corridor. She knew that despite the fact it was a machine, it was excited to play within its own designs, especially with Gil. It enjoyed moving about in real space and they often took detours at a moment’s notice. Two c-automs in orb bodies crossed the end of the current corridor, where the light display gently ended. They slowed as they passed 998, as c-automs typically did to one another, no doubt exchanging pleasantries.

She was growing accustomed to her new living situation. She paced briskly towards the nearby viewing platform that 998 had suggested they visit.

“Do you ever look at the stars or are you more focused with the ship?” Gil asked, turning to face 998 as they walked.

“Yes, there is always time for that.” Its orange-yellow glow pulsed pleasantly.

“Often?”

“Yes. Like you, I like to think and reflect.”

“But you can do so many things at once.”

“Yes, I can.”

“Is it incredible?”

“Being able to do many things at once?”

“Yes.”

“I could ask you the same. I think we’d both find it fascinating to switch places.”

They reached a junction, a hub-room where four other corridors branched off from the one they were in. 998 had told Gil it was still deciding on what to do with the passageways riddled throughout the habitable part of the ship, torn between the practical versus the beautiful. Gil did not mind. Either way, she knew she would be intrigued or fascinated by whatever it settled on.

“Middle left,” 998 reminded her as it sped forwards to lead the way.

Gil smiled and followed. She had never needed such guidance when she had her sphere.

“Do you ever want your own space?” Gil said.

998 slowed down so that it was less than a metre from her. “Would you prefer I moved elsewhere?” it said, seeming concerned.

“No! I mean, do you not want some privacy for yourself?”

998 sped up again and its glow hummed with an increased frequency. Gil thought it looked relieved. “Probably not in the same way that you require. Don’t forget, I can enter the technosystem whenever I want, and delve into the databanks at will. I don’t require any specific area to myself.”

“I wish I could enter the databanks.”

“You can, in a way. You can request anything you like from it.”

“I mean, I wish I could see it.”

“There are many different ways you could visualise the information and the categories, should you wish.”

“But you can immerse yourself in it, actually enter it.”

998 did not reply, and the two walked in silence for a few moments.
