Chapter Nine

It was just after noon when Molodin received the bad news. He was eating field rations, the men of his search party scattered around him under the shade of the trees. He looked up when the major approached him.

“My men,” he began, “have reported a group of whites near the coast.”

Molodin swallowed his food, jammed the metal spoon into the ration can, and asked, “Why do you tell me this?”

“They have fired on my men. Then they ran away, and we do not know where they have gone.”

“Show me on the map,” said Molodin as he got to his feet. He headed toward a truck parked under one of the large palm trees that bordered the rough road.

Studying the map carefully, the major finally pointed to a place not far from the coast. “Here,” he said. “They were near here.”

“Yes,” said Molodin. He thought quickly. Since the major was concerned, it meant that the white men were of unknown origin. Granted that the customs office and borders weren’t all that well guarded, but the coincidence of a group of unknown whites entering at that moment was too much to ignore.

“What have you done about this?” Molodin asked the major.

“Our president has granted us the use of one helicopter and we have flown over the area. There has been no report from it. The pilot has seen nothing.”

“I believe,” said Molodin, “that our search is too far to the east and too far to the north. The Americans would not try to walk a hundred miles to the crash site. We must shift our search to the west and south.”

The major straightened. “I will see to it.”

“Let’s put our men back on the trucks and move them. Then I believe you should return to the airport and collect the other members of our party. We shall be at the crash site soon now. The Americans have told us where to look.”
