Chapter 13

I stand at the mouth of the tunnel, looking at the world outside. It’s bright compared to the tunnel I just came through. Everyone I passed on my descent didn’t look twice at me in my dark cloak. Either they couldn’t see me, or they looked the other way like Ashwen said they would. Once at the bottom, finding the door had been tricky. The wood of the door matched the rock surrounding it, and there was hardly any light, which made finding the handle of the door difficult. After running my hands over the rough stone and wood, I finally located it and passed through into the tunnel that seemed to continue for miles. There were a couple inches of water covering the floor of the tunnel. I had taken my shoes off and left them back where it was dry, not wanting to track wet footprints back when I returned.

The surrounding trees and tall grass look the same as it did before Anna and I were collared and became prisoner-guests in my aunt’s fortress. The normalcy of it almost makes me cry, but I push the urge aside, along with my trepidation. I put a lot of trust in Ashwen, but I can’t help wondering if this is all part of Aliz’s crazy game. I hope Ashwen hasn’t picked up on my unease. It just seems like something our aunt would do. Send a trusted servant to befriend her nieces, help them formulate a plan of escape, and then take it all away with an evil cackle at the end. Pretty sure I’ve seen that movie, but unlike those stories, I don’t have a handsome guy helping out.

I cautiously step out of the mouth of the tunnel, looking around for any guards who might notice me. All is still and quiet except for the normal sounds of nature, the distant pounding of waterfalls, and the normal melodies I hear everywhere. With a deep breath for courage, I wrap the cloak around myself and walk quickly in a straight line.

I climb a small hill, thankful that Scylla seems to be covered in grass that won’t hurt my bare feet. At the top of the hill, I can just barely make out what looks like water down the other side and through the trees. I hurry down, picking my way carefully to the bank of the slow-moving river. Kneeling, I put my hands into the clear, flowing liquid and try to mimic the feel of ‘speaking’ to Ashwen before I speak the message.

Ashwen sent me. The plan is set in motion for Adeeria’s daughters to escape tonight at midnight by way of The Rill.

I pause, listening with my ears and my mind for an acknowledgement of my message. After several minutes of silent listening, I repeat the message just to be sure it reached whoever is supposed to get it. Then, I withdraw my hands from the water.

Sitting back, I look around at the landscape and feel a tension inside me ease slightly.
