The sound of the animal grew closer and more ominous. It was like a wild catâs hiss combined with a hawkâs sharp cry and just a hint of something wild and primal that made me uneasy.
Lothianâs body tensed, and his body hunched over as if he was getting ready to shift. He kept his eyes forward, looking into the trees and then back to me as if ready to shield me from whatever was coming our way.
âI donât need you to protect me,â I whispered.
âYou remember saying my sparkling conversation wasnât why I was here? Well, you were right. Protecting you is why Iâm here, and I donât need you to tell me how Iâm supposed to do that.â âNow, be quiet, and listen.â his body shifted into an athletic stance, one foot stepped back and his arms instinctively curled up slightly in preparation to fight, ready to throw a punch or deflect a blow.
âI wasnât the one launching into a monologue while whatever that thing is creeps closer and closer to us,â I hissed.
âOh, Athena, wise goddess of war, could you tell them to shut the hell up?â Archie shouted full-throated from the branches above.
We both spun around and stared up into the trees.
Archie flapped his wings and flew down from his perch, settling on my shoulder with a tight talon grip. âFinally, some common sense. Now, I suggest we all be quiet because I think that thing is coming closer.â He pointed with his beak in the direction of the noise. âAnd it doesnât sound friendly.â
Lothian and I glared at each other briefly before returning to the sound coming our way. We both held our breath, straining our ears in an attempt to make out whatever it was that was approaching.
The sound of a twig snapping in the darkness made my heart leap.
I felt my body tense, ready to fight or run.
Then I blinked.
The pixie was a tiny, shimmering figure in the dim light. His glittery silver eyes sparkled with puckishness and a grin spread across his face, revealing a shock of lavender hair. âHello,â he said with a playful tone.
âThatâs not what screeched,â Archie whispered.
As he stretched upward and outward, the pixie grew, his frail and slender body expanding and becoming more sturdy. A smile played across his lips, implying a playful personality and as his features became clearer, he transformed into a human-sized pixie, exuding a cheerful aura.
âHello,â he says once more, his voice rich and deep. I could have sworn I detected a hint of chimes in his words, like delicate crystal tinkling. He fixed his gaze on me. âYouâre a witch,â the pixie stated, then flicked a glance toward Lothian. âAnd you, a werewolf. But not in this moment. And you are in the pixie swamp. At night.â He tilted his head. âYouâre either fearless or foolish.â
âDonât want to guess what I am?â Archie snapped.
The pixie regarded Archie with a glimmer of admiration in his eyes. âYouâre quite the talking bird, arenât you?â he said.
