CHAPTER 29

Why did I think this was a good idea?

Sure, in concept, it was excellent.

In execution, not so much.

Witnessing Amara break down over Georgia Watson’s hair loss gutted me. It knocked me so off balance that I kissed her.

I’m not that guy.

But she liked it.

This is true. She told me as much.

More than once.

Still…

Kissing her might have been a way to break through her panic, but it was also selfish of me. And that’s just not me.

This…tonight…that’s more my speed.

I arranged today to help show Amara and both Watsons that they are not alone in this, that the Blizzards are so much more than just a team—we’re a family. If one of us gets knocked down, there’s a whole line of others to back them up.

I expected emotions to run high given the circumstances, but Amara Miller is proving to be an exercise in contradictions I couldn’t have anticipated.

It’s plain to see how much she cares for and loves her family, yet she seems uneasy if you point it out.

I’m still a bit baffled that she assumed I was calling her a martyr.

Who put that idea in her head?

It certainly wasn’t Coach Watson. What I told her was true—the man speaks way too highly of her to ever classify her as such.

The best surprise of the night? Amara admitting she noticed a change in my texting patterns. Two days isn’t all that long in the grand scheme of things, but it was long enough for her to miss me. Though, while embarrassing to admit, the tunnel vision I get during the season made it so I didn’t even realize I had gone radio silent on her.

I need to do better if I’m going to pursue her.

Fuck!

I guess I’m actually doing this. Hopefully it doesn’t blow up in my face like last time. I don’t know if I would survive a double whammy.

There’s a tug on my hand, and I frown at Amara attempting to free herself from my hold, not wanting to let her go.

Her eyes dart to our new audience of chin-scratching, chin-tapping, eyebrow-waggling fourth graders. Here I thought sequestering us away from the others would be enough to afford us some privacy—silly me. Not only should I have shut the door to the room behind us, I also should have locked it for good measure.

Live and learn.

Slowly lowering her hand from my chest—though I feel it’s important to note she doesn’t unwind her fingers from mine—Amara shifts to face Maverick better. “Can I ask, though, why you’re asking me if you can dye your hair?”

Instead of answering, Maverick’s familiar eyes turn my way.

Flexing my fingers, I smooth my thumb across the back of Amara’s hand and wait until I’ve recaptured her attention. “That’s why we’re here tonight.”

“Huh?”

Man is she adorable when she’s confused.

“Did you really think I used a mascot to kidnap you just to show you the changes to the arena?”

Sure, I purposely enlisted Eddie the Yeti’s help in the hope that the Watsons would be less
