CHAPTER 9

Elk Runner paced up and down along the wooden path. Most of the boards creaked from his weight, sounding like the trunks of tall trees that groaned as they swayed in a strong wind. The sound was out of place here.

These paths making the sound didn’t belong here in his time, but he was not in his time. The boards allowed visitors to witness the scorching grounds of this area and were meant to keep the people safe from the dangers. The paths, as unnatural as they looked, also helped preserve the ground from the harm that would be caused by too many footprints treading over the area.

The boards were not his reason for being here, however. Elk Runner glanced at the sky and raised his arms.

“What am I doing wrong? Grandfather… Grandmother, help me. Why will you not speak to me?”

Frustration filled his voice. His grandparents had entrusted him with the secrets of the Sky People, yet there were still so many answers he needed to discover. His grandparents had gone to the spirit world much too soon and hadn’t taught him all he needed to know about being an elder of the Sky People or how to control the time travel vessel.

“I only wanted to send the man to the past to show him the importance of the sacred mountains,” he called into the sky as his frustration grew. A raven hovered overhead on the air currents, clucking in response as if letting Elk Runner know he’d made the wrong decision.

“He has no respect for the land,” Elk Runner continued, speaking louder over the noise of the black bird as if trying to convince it to listen. The bird might be a messenger from the spirits, and he had to make them understand why he’d used the time travel vessel to send someone to the past.

“Go and tell my grandparents that I need their help.” He raised his bow high into the sky toward the raven. “Go now.”

The bird only answered with more clucks, staring down at him with its wings extended as it rode on the wind.

“Maybe I should simply shoot you out of the sky.” Elk Runner pulled an arrow from his quiver and notched his bow, aiming for the raven. The bird didn’t seem to understand the danger it was in.

For several seconds, Elk Runner aimed his weapon into the sky, following the bird’s movements. It wouldn’t be very difficult to shoot it out of the sky.

“You are not worth my arrow.” Elk Runner eased the tension on the bow and lowered it. The bird might still be a messenger from the spirits, and it wouldn’t be wise to anger them by killing the bird.

He stuck the arrow back into the quiver, then removed the time travel vessel from his pouch around his neck. For days, he’d attempted to return to the time and place where the vessel had taken him and the man, Austin, along with Shelby Osborne. Sending her to the past
