Dreams of a Final Theory or Illusions of Realism?

Here are a few of my reasons for rejecting both epistemic realism and deep realism. These are social-psychological reasons that supplement the usual historical, logical, and semantic arguments that nonrealists lodge against the defenders of strong realism. I have already noted, via the crowbar compromise, that we cannot simply assume that we humans are capable of understanding, literally and accurately, all domains of nature “all the way down.” We already have good empirical evidence that challenges that assumption. I now describe several cognitive illusions that can make scientific realism seem more attractive than it “really” is. I think there are more than a dozen such cognitive illusions. Here I have space to describe a few of the principal ones.2 You can interpret the overlap among them as just different ways of saying the same thing; but, psychologically, these different ways become mutually reinforcing.
