Corsi contacted Commander Znirka-Tul and filled her in on the situation. While they were talking, the commander reported that Vale had sent the resonance frequency along, and theyâd start scanning.
Then, since she had a comm unit to herself anyhowâOfficer Giacoia had taken her to a small room that had a comm unit and a large viewerâshe decided to contact Dar.
âHey there, gorgeous. Canât get enough of me, huh?â
Corsi smiled. After last night, she never wanted to leave Darâs side. Duty managed to get her awayâhis and hers, as he was in the midst of a major inventoryâbut she numbered their time together last night, from the glorious dinner at the Bolian restaurant to dessert at the Italian café to the entire night in his bed to falling asleep in his arms, as one of the best nights of her entire life.
âMaybe not, but Iâm afraid Iâm gonna have to beg off a repeat performance tonight.â She filled him in on what Vale told her, and what they found on the other three worlds.
Dar looked devastated. âGod, I remember what happened on Berengariaâthis is connected?â
âLooks like.â
âI thought this kind of thing didnâtââ He visibly shuddered.
âAnyhow, I need to stay on here until this guyâs caught. Valeâs way out of her depth here.â
âI would think anybody would be. This isnât exactly run-of-the-mill.â
Corsi smiled. âIâm security. Not run-of-the-mill is our specialty. Weâll catch this bastard, donât you worry. And thenâI promise the biggest celebration of your life.â
Darâs beautiful face broke into an incredibly goofy grin. âSounds like something to look forward to. Hurry up and catch this guy.â
âIâll do my best.â Then she hesitated, and said, âI love you, Dar.â
âRight back at you, Domenica.â
She signed off and leaned back in her chair. For the moment, she didnât think about eleven dead bodies and a killer whoâd gone from planet to planet without getting caught.
That prompted a thought. She tried to call up a record, but the comm unit was only a comm unit, not multipurpose like any decent Starfleet station would be. Going back out into the squad room, she sought out Officer Giacoia.
The diminutive officer was nowhere to be found, but she did see the woman whoâd greeted herâKim?âstanding with a little kid who bore an obvious resemblance.
These people are taking their children to their work in law enforcement, and weâre supposed to trust them to solve this?
âCan I help you, Lieutenant?â the officer asked.
âI need a computer terminal. I just thought of something from Starfleet records that might help.â
âAre you with Starfleet?â the kid asked.
Smiling down at the boy, Corsi said, âYes, I am.â
âYouâre an engineer, right?â
God, what a revolting concept. Corsi hated engineers. âNo, Iâm with security. We wear the same colors as them.â
âSo youâre like my mom?â
No, Iâm more professional. But Corsi wasnât impolitic enough to say that out loud.
The mom in question said, âThatâs enough, Tomo.â The boy clammed up, and Kim looked at Corsi. âI apologize for my son, Lieutenant. Iâm heading home anyhow, so why donât you use my terminal? Itâs the one across from Christineâs.
