“Didn’t take you for the singing sort, Ethan,” Sky commented from up front.

“It’s an old sea shanty I learned from another crate jockey,” he explained. “Felt it was appropriate to sing, especially since I can’t do much else at the moment.”

“Well, that’s about to change,” Sky noted as she activated her comms. “Rook, come in. We are in the C.R.A.B. and are approaching the bottom of Biome 2, please advise.”

“Understood,” came the older man’s reply. “I’m activating the reverse flow. They’ll start coming in a few moments, and not all at once. Try to not miss any as they drop in. I can’t recycle them easily without causing damage to the system.”

“Got it. Preparing to intercept packages,” Sky said before hanging up. “Get that crane ready, Ethan.”

“On it,” Ethan replied. “Get ready to see some crate jockey skills.”

Through the holo-screens, they saw the sludge water around them. It was hard to see through the muck, but thankfully whoever built the sub had planned for unfavorable visual conditions and had built visors for other waves of light alongside echolocation.

“First one!” Sky shouted as the first orb of sticky gunk came into sight. She controlled the sub to head toward it.

“On it!” Ethan said, taking control of the crane as it emerged from the top of the bathysphere. With careful control, the crane reached out and grabbed hold of the orb.

“This feels like playing one of the old orb games, except I’m catching instead of throwing,” Ethan joked as he used the orb in the crane to catch other gunk orbs. As Rook had stated, the gunky orbs stuck to each other like glue as soon as they touched, making it easier and easier to catch the others.

It also, Sky realized, was leading to another issue they hadn’t foreseen.

“Those things weigh a lot!” Sky groaned as the sphere began to sink. She did her best to fight, using her controls, but every orb Ethan caught continued to weigh the sub down. They were sinking faster than she could stop, and they were starting to approach the gaping hole in the deck below.

“Careful, I missed one,” Ethan protested.

“I’m trying,” Sky yelled back, struggling with the controls. She was trying to determine how many gunk orbs would be needed to seal the breach at the same time, but the distance was making it difficult to properly calculate.

“Ethan, we need to release the orbs. Otherwise, we’ll be grabbed into the hull breach,” she said, giving up calculating for the moment. “Turn the crane around while I raise the sub so your collection points up.”

“On it,” Ethan called. Working together, they released the collection of gunk and watched it begin to sink rapidly toward the bottom, drawn in by the current at the breach. With a muffled thud, the collection was sucked in, and it was stuck fast. It didn’t cover the entire breach yet, however.

“Alright, time to plug the holes,” Sky announced, and she pushed the throttle of the C.R.A.B. into motion. Ethan changed tactics,
