GEOLOGICAL WONDERS

Travelling between Mývatn and Egilsstaðir, you'll quickly encounter the geological wonders of Hverir and Krafla, and no doubt be lured off the Ring Road to check out mighty Dettifoss.

AVaporous vents cover the pinky-orange Námafjall ridge. At its foot, fumaroles and solfataras in the Hverir geothermal field scream steam and belch mud. The area rests on the mid-Atlantic rift (hence all the activity), and can be seen from quite a distance. It's just off the Ring Road 6km east of Reykjahlíð.

AA couple of kilometres past Hverir is the turn-off to Krafla, an active volcanic region (and geothermal power station) 7km north of the Ring Road. There's a walking track across the ominous-looking, sulphur-encrusted lava field known as Leirhnjúkur.

AThe turn-off to mighty Dettifoss waterfall is 27km east of Reykjahlíð; it’s then an easy 24km on sealed road to reach the falls. From the car park, a 2.5km loop walk takes you to the dramatic, canyon-edge viewpoint, where you can witness the power of nature in its full glory.
