A little over an hour later, stretched out like a cat on the wooden bench of the sauna, Annika finally admitted it. “All right. You were right.” She raised a hand languidly, and turned it to indicate the sauna. “It's perfect.”

“Mmm.” He cracked an eye, and reached over to squeeze her shoulder. His claws trailed on her sweaty skin, sliding easily without catch or scratch.

“I could stay here forever. If we didn't have two weather stations to install.” Her brow wrinkled, and she shifted on the hot wood. “What are we waiting for, anyway? It's been almost a week since the whiteshift dissipated.”

“Right now, for Sigurdson and Groznia to heal. You are right, we have to take the Federasky with us. Everyone out, and up the slopes.”

“They were shot! Won't they be out of action for months, and then in therapy? I was shocked the medics let Sigurdson even stand up, much less serve today.”

“We heal faster than your people. We're designed that way.” Makar sighed, and trailed his knuckles down her arm. “Your ancestors made mine to survive this planet and make it ours. Yours should have stayed up on the ships.”

“Can't disagree. Except... it's such a lovely planet. Once I got out of the hallways and windowless rooms of the university, out here, I've seen how beautiful it is. So if my ancestors were like me, we would have snuck down anyway, despite edicts.” She wrinkled her nose at him, and stuck out her tongue.

He nearly caught it, claws sliding together on the very tip as she hurriedly pulled it in, and poked her in the ribs instead. “Do that again, I throw you in pond now.”

“You would!”
