Chapter Fourteen

Saylor

After the guys load my car on a trailer, Saxton and Kade take it to the garage. I tried to insist that I would be fine here with Shayne and that Asher could go help, but they weren’t having it. Once Sax and Kade pull out of the driveway, Asher says he needs to take care of a few things inside and suggests that Shayne and I go relax by the pool.

While I go into my bedroom to change into my bikini, Shayne heads out to her car to get her suitcase, then goes into the bathroom to change once she returns. She walks out wearing a one-piece suit with a short sarong tied around her waist. That’s another thing that has changed about her over the past several years. When we were in high school, Shayne was always going to have on the skimpiest swimsuit she could find and wouldn’t have thought twice about changing in the room with me. Now though, she only wears a one piece and won’t change if anyone is in the room with her. Shayne is absolutely gorgeous, so the fact that she has suddenly became so self-conscious about her body makes me worry about what could have happened to her. She assures me it’s no big deal, but I don’t buy it.

Once we’re both ready, we head outside and over to the lounge chairs that are set up next to the pool. It’s the middle of June in Texas, and while it’s just now noon and this isn’t even the hottest part of the summer yet, it’s still close to 100 degrees outside. We lay there in the sun for a while in silence, when it occurs to me that she never answered my question at the bar last night.

“So you never said how long you plan to stay.”

“Well, I’m thinking about looking for an apartment and moving back. I was going to suggest we look for one together until I caught that little show in your bedroom between you and Asher this morning,” she says with a knowing grin. “You ready to tell me what’s really going on between the two of you?”

“I honestly have no idea. This time yesterday if you would have told me that Asher had any interest in me, I would have laughed. Then last night before you got to the bar, we ran into each other in the hallway and he shoved me up against the wall and kissed me stupid. I was seriously on the verge of letting him screw me right there when Kade interrupted us. Obviously, I was ready to go at it again this morning when you showed up. I’m beginning to think that having sex with Asher is not in the cards. Maybe that’s for the best. Since I’m working for him and living in his pool house, a hook-up might make things awkward between us.”

“Girl, you are crazy if you think he’s done with you. And you’re even crazier if you think he only wants a hook-up.
