ARABELLA CHECKED HER visage one last time, patting her hair in place and adjusting her skirt. Benito would like it. Fredrick, not so much.

Don’t wear that. It makes you look fat, he’d say.

And she’d reply, I’m sorry. I’ll select something else. An apology, and, as a result, a closet full of cast-off clothing.

She breathed in and shut her eyes. Not tonight. This was about Benito. For him to see her, for him to love her and create one perfect memory of their time together.

She wrapped an escaped tendril around her finger and released it.

She’d have this to treasure once Fredrick returned. He wasn’t so bad. She was only distressed lately because of the wedding. So much needed to be done, and with him not here to help, it made more for her. That’s all it was. Yet still ... these moments with Benito—

The doorbell rang, and she rose, donning her heels on her way out of the bedroom. In the foyer, she paused again, her nerves rattling, and mashed one hand to her waist.

They stared at each other for a long while in the low light of the entrance. He looked amazing—black dress pants, blue silk dress shirt. His smile emerged. “You dressed up for me.” He took her hands.

“For you, yes.” She drew him inside, reversing her steps, and she shut the door.

His nose twitched. “What’s that I smell?”

Joy bubbled up, overflowing in her actions. “I cooked. Come ...” Spinning around, she pulled him hastily through the house, halting before the stove. “It’s almost ready,” she said, flicking the oven light on.

He peered through the darkened glass. “Lasagna? You cooked Italian for an Italian?”

Her heart giddy, she giggled. “I figure if you liked it, then it must be true what Tillie says.”

Something flickered across his face at mention of Tillie. But as quick as it arose, it was gone. She dismissed it. It was probably nothing.

“She says I’m a great cook. I’ve always thought I’d like to cook, you know, for people. Maybe catering ... but have never pursued it. Here ...” Taking hold of him again, she pushed him in front of her toward the dining room.

He paused in the doorway. “All this is for me?” he asked.

All this. She’d used her best. Crystal glasses sparkled in the candlelight alongside fine china and polished silver. A bouquet of fresh flowers, picked from a local garden, festooned the table. He was worth it.

“I wanted it to be special.”

He raised her hands, curling them in his. “Seeing you is more than enough to make this special.”

Her face warmed, and they didn’t talk for a moment. Then she motioned him to a seat. “Sit, and I’ll serve. There’s salad to start ... Oh, I’m so excited.”

His laughter followed her into the kitchen. Removing two chilled bowls from the refrigerator, she set them on a tray.

“All this service,” he said. “It’s like fine dining.”

That’s what she wanted. She wanted him to know how important this was, wanted him impressed, because afterward—

She withheld the thought and seated herself.
