This example clearly illustrates the complexity of social dynamics involved with global leadership and what can happen when some issues are unknown to one side or the other. The U.S. team knew what they wanted for the design of the furniture, they knew how it should be built, and they knew that they had worked successfully with the Chinese factory in the past. But they also knew that, for some reason, the factory in Dongguan was not coming up with an acceptable product.

The unknown factor—that the Chinese factory was unfamiliar with a crucial part of the product design but, to avoid losing face, was hesitant to admit it to their American partners—caused the U.S. team to have the inaccurate perception that their Chinese partners were either stubborn or completely incompetent. But by using the BUILD method, particularly the Understanding, Interacting, and Learning aspects of it, the U.S. team realized that the problem wasn’t stubbornness or incompetence, but the importance of saving face.

You’d be surprised at how often leaders will come across very similar scenarios. Understanding that the need to preserve face is one thing. How a global leader discovers where and how to do so is key.
