Connor Martin

September 20th,2016

“Who?” Eva looked at the detective, her blue eyes as large as they had ever been, confusion etched all over her beautiful face as she strained to understand what he was saying.

“Connor Martin, Miss.” Detective Lyons spoke slowly and tried to be as patient with the girl as he could. Connor had clearly done a number on her, and, after taking note of the ring on her finger and the baby that was growing in her tiny belly, the detective almost felt sorry for her.

“No sir, you’ve got it wrong. His name isn’t Connor. It’s Christopher. Christopher Brian Garrett.” Eva looked at the detective with a mix of confusion and annoyance on her face. She stared at him stubbornly. She didn’t want to be defiant and anger him. It was obvious by the look on his face that there was a lot at stake.

“I’m sorry, Miss, I don’t know what he’s told you about himself, but I’ve got fingerprints and numerous records to prove that he is Connor Martin. I can’t go into detail, but he’s in a lot of trouble.” Against his better judgment, Detective Lyons’ voice softened as he spoke to her. She reminded him of his own daughter, and he tried to keep his emotions in check as he thought about his little girl getting mixed up with someone as terrible as Connor Martin.

“Detective, I had my own people do a background check on him. I don’t understand how this could’ve happened.” Jack was angry with himself because he knew that his grandfather would never have allowed this to happen to Eva. His grandfather never would’ve been so careless, and Jack was ashamed of the position he had put Eva in.

“It happens all the time with career criminals like our friend, Mr. Martin. This is what they do,” Detective Lyons said to Jack, trying to be patient. “I’m sorry, I didn’t catch who you are or what your position is here.”

“I’m Jack Palmer, the CEO of Harper Enterprises. I oversee the Harper Estate and take care of the family. I’m here to look out for Eva.” Jack squared his shoulders and stood in front of the detective as he extended his hand. Detective Lyons shook his hand begrudgingly as he stared hard at him for a moment. The detective shook his head without saying anything as he turned his attention back to Eva.

“I don’t know if you want to get a lawyer, Miss, but you might want to consider it. I’m going to need to question you and … well … my advice would be to have a lawyer present.”

“Why would I need a lawyer? I haven’t done anything wrong,” Eva said, suddenly angry. “I don’t need a lawyer for anything.”

“I’m not saying you did anything wrong, Miss. I’m just looking out for you and your rights. I’m going to have to ask you some questions, and I want you to have the option of getting a lawyer in case you wanted one.”

“I don’t need one.
