The old woman turned without another word and disappeared into the forest again.

“Who is that?” Emma asked.

“I dinnae ken.” Logan was deeply puzzled by the woman's sudden appearance, and by her words. He hadn't been boasting to Emma before – he'd truly believed that he'd met everyone who lived and worked on MacKinnon lands.

Yet he'd never seen this crone before. Why?

Another puzzle, another mystery, during a time when he simply had too damn many of them to deal with already.

“Let us away,” he whispered to Emma. “This could be some sort of trick, or a trap.”

“A trap for who?” she asked. “You? Why would anyone want to do that?”

The image of Old MacIvar flashed across Logan's mind – the dark joy the miserable old wretch would feel if someone lured Logan into a snare and brought his freshly-severed head to MacIvar as a trophy. “Never ye mind. I'll explain once we return to the keep.”

“But what if this is the old woman I came here to find?” Emma protested. “I mean, she sounds like a Druid, doesn't she? Or at least, someone who might know what the hell is going on with me? I've come all this way, I have to find out for sure or else I might never find her again!”

“She's probably just barmy and talking a load of bollocks! Besides, if we found her once, we can surely find her again.”

“Oh?” Emma crossed her arms obstinately. “Do people you've never seen just randomly appear on your lands very often? What if she disappears just as quickly? This could be my one chance to get home, Logan! Please, help me!”

He saw the desperation in her eyes and sighed. Damn, but he seemed powerless to deny this strange woman anything once she'd asked it of him. He'd never been in someone's thrall so completely, and he was irritated at himself for it.

“Very well,” he agreed. “But we must be careful, ye ken?”

“Yeah, fine, I ken. Now come on, before we lose her!”

But when they made their way through the thick branches with their horses in tow, they found the old woman waiting for them in front of a tiny cottage. There were several goats grazing in front of it, and one of them was eating from her hand.

“Done wasting time, are ye?” she asked pleasantly. “Splendid. As ye can see from my age, I dinnae have much time tae waste. Now come inside. and worry not about traps laid by the MacIvars, Logan MacKinnon, for ye may have noticed that there's nae enough room in my home for his blue-bearded kinsmen tae lie in wait for ye. At any rate, yer fate is tae meet them on the field of battle, not tae be snared by them in secret.”

She opened the door of the cottage, gesturing for them to enter.

As they left their horses outside and walked across the threshold, the words she'd just spoken were ringing in Logan's ears. It was no great feat for her to know who he was – all who lived on MacKinnon lands did.
