Chapter Twenty-one
Beckett
After spending years in this maddening stasis, one more day should have been easy. Being with Luciana hadnât even been part of my plan until after graduation. My time line was months ahead of schedule.
And yet, every fucking part of the day was torture. Seconds dragged on like hours. Minutes were days. Hours were centuries.
I was old and grizzled by the time school let out.
The fact was, tomorrow could be more of the same. Giving Luciana space was a necessary evil, but I was resentful that it was.
If things had gone according to my plans, she wouldnât have needed to take time to consider being with me. I would have had the whole school year to become such an integral part of her life she would have accepted becoming mine as easily as breathing.
But my plans were based on nothing but logic and reason. They didnât account for Lucianaâs own feelings developing, and they sure as hell didnât include Bianca putting her filthy, disease-ridden mouth on mine.
Iâd been planning to get Luciana to the point where sheâd ask for me to kiss her, but Jesus Christ, never in my wildest dreams had I fathomed it would happen a month into the school year.
Not that I would take any of it back. Even though Iâd fucked it all up after, it had been worth it to have her.
I reminded myself of that as I headed out for soccer practice. Patience was my finest virtue. I could wait for Luciana to come around to me. If her visit to my room yesterday had meant anythingâand I thought itâd meant a lotâI wouldnât be waiting long.
A pair of waving arms caught my eye as I jogged across the grass. Stopping, I fully turned toward my sister-in-law, Sera, who was assisting the marching band practice.
She tapped her watch and pointed to me.
I gave her a thumbs-up.
She made a heart sign with her fingers.
I had to stop myself from flipping her off. That was our vibe, and Sera would have found it hysterical, but I figured it was best not to give the finger to a faculty member, even if she was essentially my relative.
I waved to her instead and continued making my way to practice. Iâd see her tonight, which sheâd been attempting to remind me of with her random hand signals.
The next hour was another test of my self-control. As always, the field hockey team was practicing on the field adjacent to ours. I only allowed myself to look three times. The first, Luciana was running passing drills. The second, they were scrimmaging and Luc was charging down the field. The final time was during their cooldown.
Stretching. They were stretching.
My resolve was stretching too. Paper thin by now.
Their practice ended before ours, and the girls cut through our field on the way to their locker room. I made sure to be in their path. When Luciana walked by, I waited to see what she would do.
She was talking animatedly with Bella and Isla, but her gaze snapped to mine like she knew I was watching.
