Chapter 25
âThatâs my father. The one on the left. He fought in the war. With your people in the Pacific, as a matter of fact.â Mrs. Kilnochry waved a hand through the air. âThey captured him, ye know. Later. Have ye heard of Sandakan in Borneo? The railway? He survived, and then came back here tae marry my mother. Thatâs her there. I take after her more than him, moreâs the pity. These ears could only come from her side.â
Sunny focused on Sethâs face, which had been schooled into amused politeness ever since the moment they had been ushered into Mrs. Kilnochryâs whitewashed stone cottage.
Myrtle Kilnochry had a reputation for speaking her mind, and she was on a mission to do it now. Knowing that Seth was a journalist with an interest in photography, she was taking the opportunity to show him every photograph in her house.
âWho took this picture?â Seth picked up a black-and-white photograph of a young brunette woman in a twinset that showed off her spectacular figure.
Mrs. Kilnochry adjusted her glasses before smiling beatifically. âMy husband. Thatâs me in the late fifties. He met me on a trip from Edinburgh. He was a travelling salesman in those days. Encyclopedias. And he knocked on my parentâs door and I opened it. I fell in love with him at first sight. He always used tae travel around with his camera. Always taking pictures. Shall I show ye some more?â
Seth glanced up at Sunny, and she found herself completely charmed by his good-natured grin. âI would love that. Did your dad ever talk about the war? Both my grandfathers fought. One was in Italy and the other one was in the Pacific, probably getting a little rowdy with your dad.â He gave her a wink.
Mrs. Kilnochryâs eyes lit up. âOh? Italy. I have a book on the American involvement in the war somewhere here. It was Rogerâs. He collected books on the subject.â She peered at the bookshelves lining her living room before selecting a small blue hardcover. âHere we are. There are pictures in this. Have you seen it?â
âNo. No, I havenât.â Seth leaned forward in his chair as Mrs. Kilnochry leafed through the pages to reveal a series of black-and-white photographs in the middle. Seated in an armchair across the room, Sunny experienced a moment of pure happiness watching the older woman and Seth examine the pictures, murmuring to each other as Seth asked questions that Mrs. Kilnochry answered with an endearing gravity.
âWere ye always this interested in people?â Mrs. Kilnochry asked, finally setting the book aside.
âAlways.â Seth grinned. âOr at least, I always wanted to help people in some way or another. From what my mom tells me, I was determined to be a fireman until I was around seven or so. And then I wanted to be a Jedi knight.â
Sunny laughed. âA noble cause.â
âYeah, but then I began to hang out with my dad and his army buddies more. Dadâs a retired colonel. I think I liked to get as much time with him as I could because he was away fighting so often .
