CHAPTER 11

The day dawned with drizzle that turned to mist. Phil woke to find himself alone, but he heard voices from outside, so he stumbled out of bed and into the little clearing.

Though daytime made the village visible, it did little for its charm. It was still just a circle of wood-and-grass huts around a muddy central area, which was empty. The voices came from behind a screen of trees, so Phil headed in that direction, following a path that wound through the vegetation.

The path ended at water and the world opened up into a gigantic lake. Or was it even a lake? It couldn’t be the sea. They were in the middle of the continent. Still, an open expanse of water extended as far as the eye could see, in both directions. The far bank was lost in the drizzle.

“Close your mouth. Half the insects on the Amazon are going to fly in there,” Melanie said.

She stood in a pool up to her thighs, and Jen stood next to her.

“Eyes forward,” the Marine said even as Phil realized they weren’t wearing much more than their panties.

“Okay,” he replied, looking away. “But hurry up. I want to get this grime off of me.”

“Go ahead. Just don’t watch us.”

Not even bothering to worry about whether the women were watching, Phil stripped down to his underwear and stepped into the water. It felt tepid against his skin, and silt and sediment from the bottom floated around, but still, he felt wonderful as he passed his hands over his legs and removed the caked-on blood and sweat and dirt.

“Watch out for piranhas,” Melanie said. “Don’t get your pecker bitten off.” He turned sharply over to where she was, only to see her grinning at him. “Eyes forward, soldier,” she admonished. “I don’t think there are piranhas in there. The natives were all in the water earlier, frolicking naked like we’d never been kicked out of the garden of Eden.”

“How the hell are you even standing?” he asked.

“I’m putting my weight on the other foot,” Melanie replied.

He wanted to tell her that she was insane, that the night before, she’d been in so much pain that she kept passing out on them, and that what she was doing was stupid. Instead, he settled for: “You need to be careful with infections.”

“Yeah, I know. But all the blood was starting to attract flies. I saw some pots back there, I’ll boil some water and clean off the wounds again when I get back.” She paused. “Okay, you can look now.”

Melanie was wearing an old t-shirt that the natives must have given her, while Jen was resplendent in the same clothes she’d had on before—but now free of their coat of dirt.

“You need help getting out?” Phil said.

“Jen can do it. You should just enjoy the bath. I don’t think we’re going to have much leisure time going forward.”

“What do you mean?” Phil said.

Jen responded: “She means that you have probably made Vic extremely angry. Vic is… very unpleasant when he gets mad.
