Chapter 09
The people of White River Town had finally begun warming up to me after that, even going so far as to bring me dishes whenever they visited my farm for training in the Blight. Some even went so far as to call me friend!
Maybe I should start calling my farm a school instead. I spent far more time helping the residents of White River Town cultivate the Blight than tending my own crops. A surprisingly large number of Qi-cripples popped up, about thirty in all, and they took to the Blight like fish to water.
And let me tell you right now that the Blight is a far more chaotic force than I ever imagined.
My Blight Eater studentsâformerly traditional Qi cultivatorsâwerenât much of a problem. They struggled to contain the Blight, took more time to acclimate themselves to its corrupting influence. Wu Tee and Xia Piam were my most diligent students among the Eaters, and were able to incorporate enough Blight to bolster their strength, speed, and endurance somewhat. No berserker state for them, since their cores couldnât handle the quantity of Blight required.
At least not yet.
No, it was my Blight Feaster students that proved to be the real headaches. Former Qi-cripples like myself were naturally attuned to the Blight, more readily adapting to its corruptive influence. They progressed remarkably quickly under my guidance and assistance, where we explored their limits. Them biting off more than they could chew was a pretty common occurrence, though I really was not one to talk. Iâm pretty sure I slipped into a berserker state far more often than my students when I first mucked around with the Blight. Though to be fair, I didnât have a supremely talented, infinitely patient, and shockingly handsome teacher to guide me on those first few days.
Ahem.
Let me go into a little background before I continue further. Traditional Qi cultivators were organized into five Paths: Sanguine, Verdure, Ash, Flux, and Ether. All forms of traditional Qi cultivation revolved around these basic Paths, each technique working off of their innate properties.
The Blight didnât want to be constrained to just five paths. Or ten. Or twenty. Each expression of the Blight followed its own distinct Path, expressing its power in different forms. A would-be cultivator would peer into the Labyrinthine maze of Broken Paths, and they would follow whatever path made the most sense to them. This was the norm, with shared Paths being the exception.
Take for example Lai Wein. She had access to the Paths of Rejection and Desiccation, with a minor understanding of Decay. She could create waves of force at will and pull the lifeblood out of any living thing if she concentrated hard enough. She turned me into a shriveled-up sack of dried leather when she went berserk after discovering her talent with Desiccation. I very nearly went into a berserker state right then and there myself. I would most likely have if I didnât immediately dash toward the river and dunk my head in. A couple of corrupted fish tried biting my head off, but I bit them right back.
