After several hours, Peg appeared in the waiting room, just when Wheel of Fortune was getting interesting.

“Here you are,” she said. “He’s up, and he wants to talk with you alone before your sister gets here.”

Ned had tried to call Carla a few times at her apartment, but it just rang and rang. It wasn’t like her to not be here with him, but she’d always resented that Ned was the chosen heir, and probably didn’t want to witness the passing of the torch, even a provisional one, if that’s indeed what was about to happen.

“I’m ready,” Ned said, and hoped he at least convinced Peg of that.
