Miriam stared at the retreating taillights. The tires kicked up so much dirt that the thick cloud of dust made it hard to see. She looked back toward Gevu, but he was gone. Holy shit, Ben was right. Harper lay on the ground, gasping for breath. The magnitude of Gevu’s weight pressing on top of him had caused him to pass out. Her boy weighed well over four hundred pounds. Now Harper was coming to. Miriam took advantage of the time she had and ran to the radio attached to the dash of the lonely Jeep.

“This is an order from Dr. Miriam Wetzel! All hands, stand down. Hold position at base! Patrols, pull back!” She only hoped they would listen, and she dropped the mike. Her feet slipped on Gevu’s blood, and she stumbled on her way back to Harper’s side. Her shirt was damp from sweat, and her hands were trembling. Where would they go? Would they get away? Holy Banneker, I have no idea what the hell will happen to me.

When Harper had found her at the base of the elevator after Gevu and Binah’s escape, she’d made a great show of pounding on the metal doors in anger and frustration. At least the emotions she’d felt were real. But how much had he really seen? How much did he know? Should she take her chances and run now, or see how it all played out?

Miriam didn’t get a chance to decide. Harper’s hands suddenly lashed out and struck her across the face. She fumbled for her pistol and realized she must have dropped it on the ground somewhere. He pivoted upright, grabbed her around the neck, and squeezed her throat tight.

“You bitch. You knew. And you let them go.” He dragged her to the elevator doors and pushed the button.

Going down. Oh, she was going down, all right. For her, there would be no escape. No freedom. Her decisions had ensured she’d go through hell. And hell couldn’t have a better overseer than the man with his forearm pressed across her windpipe.
