Chapter Eleven

December 30th

Reconciliation Day?

Amy, Nina, and Frankie were up early. They sat on their balcony wrapped in blankets and sipped their coffee as they watched the sky change to the colors of dawn.

“This is mind-blowing,” Amy said softly. “It’s so, so beautiful. Makes me want to never leave.”

“We have three more days. Let’s try to stretch it out spending more time together.”

“We have plans today to meet for lunch and go shop-hopping,” Amy said.

“Shop-hopping?” Nina asked.

“I don’t like to call it shopping exactly. That implies I am going to purchase something.”

“And shop-hopping doesn’t?” Frankie scoffed.

“Semantics.” Amy giggled.

“Tomorrow night is New Year’s Eve. There’s a party in the lobby, and then there are fireworks on the lake. Randy said you can see them from all over.”

“Sounds good to me. I wonder where we should have dinner?”

“Why don’t we go out again tonight and stay here tomorrow? The food at the restaurant is particularly good, and I imagine a lot of places are already booked,” Frankie said, and quickly got up to use the house phone. “I should call now.” She called the front desk and asked to be connected to the restaurant. She was told they could accommodate her party at the nine o’clock seating. “Perfect. Thank you.” She walked back to the balcony and gave the girls the info.

Room service knocked at the designated eight o’clock hour stipulated on the card they’d left hanging on the doorknob the night before. After they finished breakfast, they went down the elevator and boarded the jitney that would drop off each for her morning activity. They agreed to meet back at the hotel at noon, change their clothes, go to lunch, and then meander the streets of the town.

* * *

Nina decided to try a different trail where the jitney made a routine stop. She didn’t notice the blue car following them. As she got off the small bus, she thought she saw a glimmer of blue but brushed it off. Even though they hadn’t figured out who might be following her or why, the three had agreed to ignore their phantasms, and of course, the ugly, creepy elves. Several people got off the jitney at the same place, which made it easier for Nina to ignore the intrusion. If it really was an intrusion. She decided she would stick close to the two couples ahead of her, but far enough away so she wouldn’t be considered an intrusion herself. As long as they were within sight, she was okay.

Just before she entered the park, her phone buzzed. There was a text from Lois saying: Meant to tell you. Busy packing. Jane did not get the role and the director doesn’t want any changes to the script.

Nina wrote back: Thanks. Enjoy your trip. Nina sighed. At least she’d done her best, even if Jane didn’t deserve it. Nina always took the high road.

It was a clear sunny day with the temperature hovering around fifty degrees. There had been talk about snow, but it surely didn’t feel like it.
