Like every other day, Noah had Miles drop him off at Shellseeker Beach in the morning. But today wasn’t like any other day, Noah thought as he strolled from Roosevelt Road, around Teddy’s house, through the garden and to the tea hut.

For one thing, he wasn’t expecting Katie today. It was Saturday and she said she had different hours. For another, at some point in this day, he was going to meet his father.

Nerves jangled through him as he reached the tea hut, hoping to see Claire to get more information on when DJ would arrive. But Eliza and Teddy sat at the counter, papers strewn in front of them, deep in conversation.

“Morning, ladies,” he said, feeling strangely familiar with the situation. It was like strolling into a bar or restaurant where he worked, early for his shift, chatting up management.

“Oh, thank God you’re here,” Teddy said. “We need your help, Noah.”

“What’s up?” He came around the small entrance to get behind the counter and lifted the “honor system” jar, which was utterly empty. “I see the dishonor system is in full force this morning.”

“I had a few customers who only had credit cards,” Teddy said. “So I just let them go.”

Noah and Eliza shared a look, as he was quickly learning the pecking order around here. Teddy was the official owner, but Eliza was her unofficial partner. He had no idea how the finances worked out, and didn’t care, but it didn’t take long to figure out that Eliza was a better manager than Teddy.

“How can I help?” he asked.

“We need ideas,” Eliza said. “For the tea hut.”

“You mean other than having a person who works here with a legit cash register?” He was only half teasing.

“I love that idea,” Teddy said. “And I’d give you the job in a heartbeat, but even when you collect money for the tea, it wouldn’t be enough to pay a salary.”

“But if we sold more than tea…” Eliza said, tapping her pen on the paper, which looked like a list of ideas “I really think this section of the business is underserved,” she continued. “And there’s a kitchen-ish space in the back, so I thought maybe we could start selling baked goods and increase our income here.”

He nodded. “I’m sure you could, if people on the beach wanted pastries and tea.”

“What do they want?”

“Cold drinks and junk food?” he suggested. “Maybe some snow cones and ice cream sandwiches?”

Teddy made a face. “It’s not the Shellseeker Beach way. Cold tea, yes. Maybe I could serve small finger sandwiches.”

“The ones with no crust?” His voice, and probably his face, gave away his true feelings. “You have to think beach food, ladies. I guess beer and umbrella drinks are out of the question.”

“We’d have to get a license from the city of Sanibel,” Teddy said. “Not completely impossible if we are willing to, you know, offer up our firstborn child and name the place after the mayor.”

Noah snorted a laugh and stepped back to take a better look at the “kitchen” in the back of the small hut.
