Sanctum: The Xenoworld Saga Book Four by Kyle West

When I walked down the slope toward the Aether pool, it seemed as if I was going in slow motion. My head felt woozy, and if felt as if my legs would give out from under me. I stopped mere inches from the edge, which was utterly still. The liquid looked more like gel, although I knew Aether to be more viscous than unrefined ichor.
I closed my eyes, seeking out Silence. If this was going to hurt, I wanted to be as far from the pain as possible. With my mind completely quiet, it was easier to ignore my fear, and when I did walk forward, it would feel as if I were doing it outside myself.
I took my first step, and felt the warm liquid wrap itself around my right foot. It burned, but the feeling soon subsided. I took another step, and another, until the Aether was up to my knees. Still, there was no pain, only a fiery warmth that intensified. Even as it grew hotter and hotter, I felt no pain.
Outside Silence, I could hear a gasp pass through the Priests. My eyes were closed, so I had no idea what was happening. However, I made myself continue walking, until the Aether was up to my neck. The fire continued to burn. It wasnât painful, but the feeling grew in intensity until I felt myself shaking.
And out of a compulsion outside myself, I dove beneath the surface, feeling myself drawn toward a bright light at the very bottom. Whether that light was real or imagined, I couldnât say, but it reminded me of the light I had seen when I had joined my fatherâs memory.
This light was different, however, because that first light had been a pathway to the Xenofold. Part of me was tempted to reach for it; I felt that if I did, it would give me all the answers I sought.
Your Prophecy is here, it said. If you would but reach out and take it.
I nearly did, at that moment, since my desire to know the answers was greater than anything else. But I felt as if those answers would come at a price, a price I couldnât determine at that moment.
All the sameâ¦I found myself reaching out, my arm in front of me a bright, silvery stream, my fingers like a splitting estuary joining a sea of light.
I want the answers, I said. I need to know what I wrote in the Prophecy.
And then, a voice entered my mind. The same voice of my dreams, and the same voice Iâd heard in the place between worlds. The Reapers are coming. The Bloodharvest draws near. The Elekai shall fall, and there is nothing you can do.
No, I said. I wonât let it happen.
You were born to die for them, the voice said. But it shall all be in vain. Your very words said that you would not be able to save yourself or your people. You knew they would forget. But die, you must.
