Chapter Thirty-One

Adam endured the first two sets of drills with his squad, all the while trying to work out who he could trust, and how to deal with the discovery that Major Hunter was secretly working for the governor.

Mayor Ellis was the one he needed to warn, but there was no way to reach him. Their walkies were likely too short-ranged to contact Ellis, and anyone could listen in. The next time Adam saw Ellis would be after the attack on the Governor’s Mansion. They were supposed to meet back up at the Capitol building, where Ellis would be waiting to receive the governor in a secure room in the basement. But now Adam knew that they’d never get that far.

The governor was expecting them. They’d be lucky if his Rangers weren’t already moving to surround them.

Adam led Delta squad to victory through their second drill, this one to enter and clear a room and take a dummy governor hostage while under fire from Alpha and Bravo squads.

They were using paintball guns for the drills rather than blanks since they didn’t want to risk discovery with the noise.

Adam found that to be deeply ironic, considering that Hunter must have already betrayed them to the governor. But maybe Hunter was like Ramirez—a double agent who’d been feeding the Nightingales intel from the inside.

Adam sincerely hoped to learn that was the case. But how would he be able to tell the difference between a real enemy agent and a known informant? Only Ellis could answer that, and he wasn’t here.

At this point, Adam’s focus was on damage control. If the operation was compromised, then the coup had already failed, but maybe they could still find a way to pull the plug before the governor sprang his trap.

The problem was, Crystal wasn’t here, and neither was Carla. Alerting all three prongs of the operation before tonight, and somehow doing so without forcing the governor to play his hand early, was going to be next to impossible.

Major Hunter called for a break, and all four squads returned to the lobby. Adam saw his chance and used the brief reprieve to pull Connor aside.

“What’s up, Sergeant?” Connor asked.

Adam glanced around quickly to make sure no one was standing close enough to listen in. Their squadmates were engaged in noisy banter and good-natured ribbing of the ones who were covered in bright blue paint from the last drill. Adam dropped his voice to a whisper, and said, “Major Hunter is a Vulture.”

Connor blinked at him. “What?”

“Listen up. I know we’ve had our differences, but I need someone I can trust, and we don’t have much time.”

Connor’s brow furrowed. “Okay…”

“We need to expose the major, but before we do that, I need to confiscate everyone’s radios. We can’t afford to have anyone warning the governor. We need to find out who else here is working with him before we can trust anyone.”

“Are you sure about this, Adam?” Connor asked. “Because if there’s even a chance that you’re not…”

“Either he’s an agent, or he’s a double agent, and we need to figure out which.
