Herbert Hoover High School, pictured three years after its 1930 opening, served students from Kensington, Talmadge, and surrounding neighborhoods. A San Diego Union article from June 1, 1930, quotes area developer Roy Lichty as saying that the school gave these neighborhoods “the most complete and diversified educational facilities enjoyed by any section of the city.” The first graduating class, in 1932, had 164 students. Her father, George Forbes, was a prominent real estate agent and developer of Kensington Heights. Born in Montana, Marie spent her youth in Santa Monica, California, before moving to Kensington with her parents and siblings in the early 1930s. (Courtesy of Herbert Hoover High School.)
