“Did you say ‘us?’” Tria asked.

“It’ll be complicated, and it’ll take time for anyone to trust you, but I can promise that my people will treat you well. Isn’t it better than getting wiped out here?” Breaker asked, watching her expression grow uncertain.

“Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to leave her here either, but she’s conditioned not to trust anyone she didn’t meet on this ship,” Brian said. “She’s not like us, she doesn’t understand that there is an entire universe out there, that most people are free for better or worse.”

The lights in the hall turned red, and Breaker knew he only had a few seconds to take advantage of this opportunity. “There is a lot to see,” Breaker told her, watching her chew her bottom lip. “A lot of my people will want to know everything you can tell them about this ship and what goes on here. Others will want to help you, and I promise I’ll make sure that you are more free after you leave then you would be if you stayed. I know you don’t trust me yet, but you won’t regret taking a chance.”

“I’m really sorry, but we don’t have time. That red light means that we may already be under a lockdown that I can’t override,” Brian said urgently, standing and moving towards the door.

“I won’t be wiped? Your people won’t make me forget everything?” Tria asked.

“They’ll want you to remember everything, and we all get a lot of satisfaction when we liberate someone, so this is gonna work out,” Breaker said, standing up and extending his hand.

“Okay,” she replied, taking it as they left the cell.
