mSpot co-founder Daren Tsui. After his software company was acquired by Samsung, he became vice president for content and services, running Samsung’s streaming music service, Milk Music.

Tsui and Ho became early movers in an industry shift, releasing in 2004 a service called mSpot Music, a tool for audiophiles to upload their music libraries to a “locker” on a server and access it anywhere with a connection. Consumers no longer had to carry around an iPod with a music library. Suddenly music could be streamed on demand on their mobile phones.

“Until then, you stored your music library on your PC, and from there you could download it to your iPod with a cable,” T.J. said.

Before the days of Spotify, mSpot worked across all different devices, from television to speakers and phones and tablets. It was the ecosystem that Samsung sought. T.J. set out to meet the pair and urged his boss, G.S. Choi, to look into an acquisition of the company.
