Chapter 18

It took me an hour to close up and set the alarm before I could leave. But I had a full thermos of hot coffee and several paper coffee cups in my bag when I walked into the sheriff's office.

I’d left Ollie in my car. I felt bad, but knew that unless I could run her home quickly, I didn’t have any other choice. While it was cold, I had a blanket in the car for emergencies, so I told Ollie to curl up. I also had a doggie water dish on the floorboard and a few treats.

Ada and Tony were already there, too. I was glad I thought to bring extra coffee and cups. I highly doubted the sheriff’s station would have good coffee for us. And I knew we were going to need it to stay up until Verna was released.

“What’s going on so far?” I asked when I set the thermos down on the seat next to Jade. Then I pulled out the cups as well as a box of sugar and powdered creamer. “Help yourself.”

All three of them stood up and sighed. With a collective “Thank you” they each poured themselves a cup of hot coffee. Once we all had our coffee, Jade spoke up. “Verna has her attorney with her, he showed up about twenty minutes ago. But other than that, I don’t know anything. The sheriff isn’t sharing anything with us.”

I sat down with a thunk and sighed. “Do you think they’re going to arrest her? I mean she’s an old lady. I don’t think spending the night in jail is going to be good for her health.”

Three sets of eyes glared at me.

“We are not old, just well-seasoned.” Jade harrumphed, then took a sip of her hot coffee. “Mmm, Verna would like this coffee right about now. Do you think the sheriff will let her have a cup?”

“Good question. I’ll ask.” I stood up and poured another cup and fixed it the way I knew Verna liked, two sugars and no creamer. Then I walked over to the desk Sergeant. “Hi, I know Verna is being questioned, but she’s old.” I lowered my voice on the last two words so as not to upset my friends. “And if the sheriff is going to take much longer, she’s going to need some caffeine. Do you think she could have this cup?”

The badge on the skinny man in front of me read – Sargeant Walsh. He looked me over, then picked up the cup. “I’ll take it to her.” When he turned around and walked down the hallway, I noticed that he sniffed the coffee and then took a sip.

“Hey, that’s for Verna. If you want a cup, all you have to do is ask. I have more,” I yelled at his back, but the man ignored me.

When he came back to the desk, his hands were empty, so I hoped that meant he gave it to Verna. When I asked him about the coffee he only grunted.
