TEN
Mason finished his fatherâs call privately. The news had clearly shaken Emma, so he took his dad off speakerphone and continued the conversation. She had walked to the window in a daze and stared out into the yard.
That was ten minutes ago, and she still stood in the same place.
Mason approached and placed his hand at the small of her back. âEm, you okay?â
She jumped and pivoted, nostrils flaring. âWhat do you think? This will never be over.â Her legs buckled, her CGM alarm sounding once again.
Mason grabbed her before she fell to the floor. âWhen was the last time you ate?â He lifted her into his arms and carried her to the couch.
âMama?â Sierra dropped her puzzle pieces and ran to her mother.
âIâm okay, baby girl.â She hugged her daughter, peering over her head. âMason, can you get my medical bag from the kitchen table?â
She had been adamant about keeping her insulin within reach.
âOn it.â He carried it over and set it on the coffee table. Opening it, he brought out the necessary items.
After tending to Emma, he tucked Sierra in beside her mother and covered them both with an afghan. âYou need to rest.â
Emmaâs eyes drooped closed. âIâm sorry, Mason. I know this isnât your fault.â She kept her voice level low.
âYou donât need to apologize.â
âWhat else did your dad say? How did Lincoln get released so early?â
How could he tell her it was possible some evidence her team had submitted may have been planted? Deciding never to hide anything from her, he pulled up a rocking chair and sat. âIâm sorry to have to tell you this, but apparently before Will died, he petitioned the courts and stated your team planted evidence.â
She opened her eyes and propped herself against the pillows. âWhat? Impossible. We were thorough. What evidence?â
âThe ledgers. How did you get them?â
âSomeone within Luther Shipping sent them to the DA.â
âWho?â he asked.
âDonât know. But when they received a warrant to search their financials, the ledgers proved to be accurate.â Emma tucked the afghan closer to her sleeping daughter.
âThey claim the police planted the evidence.â
âNo way would our task force have done that!â
âEm, please rest. We can talk about this later.â He got up and repositioned her pillows before gently kissing her forehead.
He snapped upright. Did he really just do that? It was an impulse and one that now felt comfortable. He checked for Emmaâs reaction but saw none.
Sheâd fallen asleep. Already.
Rain pelted the window. The weather turned the late-afternoon skies black, threatening another summer thunderstorm. Not again. He knew how much Sierra hated them, and this season they had been relentless. Hopefully sheâd sleep through it. He closed the blinds to block out the sounds and pending lightning flashes. A question tumbled through his mind.
Was the storm a sign of more danger heading their way?
Godâs got this, Mason.
His motherâs words popped into his head. Words sheâd lived by, but ones he couldnât grasp. Not with all the tragedy happening in the world and in their own lives.
