Like Ethan, many people are hoping for change but are not sure the organization is ready for it.

Ethan has just seen the results from the latest employee survey. He and many of his colleagues were pleased that the organization asked team members how they experienced the work environment.

Ethan went out on a limb and honestly identified ways in which the organization was not safe for people to speak up. He is encouraged when he hears leaders make statements about the importance of the survey results. The senior team pledged to create a work environment in which people are engaged and speak up.

However, he is disheartened when one of the worst offenders in leadership is promoted. And then one of his colleagues is called into her manager’s office and asked about her responses on the survey, even though they had been told it was anonymous.

Ethan wonders: Is this just another program of the month, or can we realistically hope that things will actually change?
