Chapter 19

N ight rolled into day far too swiftly. As the sun rose, Mark Antony knew the time for love was over – the time had come to get some much-needed answers. He cradled Cleopatra in the crook of his arm, stroking her back gently as he began to probe subtly for information.

“You have not told my why you are so interested in my younger twin.”

“He intrigues me,” she murmured. “He wants me, yet he resists.”

“What makes you so sure?” He kissed the top of her head gently.

She stretched against him seductively. “I have been able to arouse him without difficulty, and with his wife watching. The wine should have made it easy to entice him last night, but he eluded me.”

He stopped stoking her arm. “He did not drink much. I told him it was drugged.”

She lifted her head. “Why would you do that?”

His answer was laced with both sarcasm and jealousy. “Do you really think I would walk up to him and say, ‘here is my wife – fuck her as I have fucked yours’? If you do, you do not know me as well as you think.”

Cleopatra pondered his reply, sensing the jealousy in his tone. “What I do not understand is why he does not simply give in as better men have? Caesar was a far greater challenge and I had him on the first night.”

“I made you wait,” he countered.

She laughed lightly. “I believe I was the one who made you wait.”

Mark Antony said nothing. He merely raised an eyebrow and waited for an explanation, which she willingly gave.

“I knew your reputation well. Women of all ranks were throwing themselves at the hero of Philippi. You only had to snap your fingers and one would lie on her back and allow you to rut with her. I needed you to want me above every one of those women.” She shifted her body over his, rubbing herself against him in an attempt to arouse him again. “I calculated the number of days I could keep you at bay – long enough to keep you yearning, but not so long that your eye would wander. I could not afford for you to reach satisfaction with a lesser woman.”

He rolled sideways shifting her back onto the bed. “And you were more than worth the wait. But tell me, why is it so important that you have him?”

Cleopatra looked confused momentarily. She was not used to having him turn down an offer of sex. She answered the question. “Your looks and personality are so similar I find myself interested in what other similarities you share.”

“A fair point,” he agreed with a nod, “but I do not believe that is all you are interested in.”

At once, Cleopatra realised she had misjudged him. For too long, Mark Antony had been a slow-witted drunk, but once again she saw the sharp, intelligent schemer she had first come to admire. There was no point in making a denial he would see straight through.

“You are correct.
