The Goddess

Briganti’s face shimmered. Her gossamer hair changed colour with every inward breath. Pale to dark. Golden, red and brown. Her translucent skin pulsed cream through to ebony and back again. Her eyes, too, flickered through a rainbow of hues. She was mesmerising. Luminescent. Hypnotic.

“Welcome, Beloved.”

My heart lightened hearing her ethereal voice. Joy swelled in my chest, and my flesh tingled.

“Jessamy, sweet child of love, a beautiful name. I called you after the jasmine flower. So delicate and fragrant, yet tenacious and resilient. It suits you well.”

Excitement ran over me. I wanted to squeal. Obviously, I was on some acid trip, though the sting in my ankle had left a physical mark. I would awaken soon. For now, however, my stomach somersaulted as if I was meeting all my teenage heroes at once. Teenage heroes, I didn’t know I had.

This can’t be happening.

Pam squeezed my hand. “It is real. Accept it. Your spirit knows. Listen to your heart. You are our guest of honour. The Goddess is here to show you the truth.”

Silly mind-melting trick. Can’t a girl think in peace?

“My child,” Briganti glowed a freckled bronze with platinum white hair. “Ask whatever questions you have.”

All eyes were upon me.

It may be a dream, but I needed answers to so many questions.

“I am an Anglican priest. I have my own faith. I believe in one true God. How am I supposed to believe in you as well?”

“You do not need to believe, just know.”

Ah, my aunts’ propensity for riddles has a long lineage.

“Okay, well, and how do I fit into all this?”

The Goddess, now glistening a burnished copper with coal-black tresses, beamed a look familiar to any child who’s tried to argue with their mother for more pieces of birthday cake. That knowing tell that says you’ve already tucked away four slices, but I’ll play along (in time, you will understand why I was going to say no).

“My child. You are the One. You protect the portal.”

“The portal?”

Pam nudged my arm with her elbow. “The wells. All three are gateways for the Goddess to cross.”

“Even the one under my church font? She won’t get far if she tries to get through that.”

My ghostly ancestors centred their collective gaze upon me. I don’t think they appreciated my sense of humour.

Unphased, with skin like mahogany and dazzling violet eyes, Briganti continued.

“We travel through water and air. The water cleanses us before we return from your world. To bring harmony and peace, we swim with the dolphins and soar with the eagles. We watch over the faithful and shepherd the weak.” Her presence grew stronger with every word, forming a halo around her. “Your faith helps restore balance because it is pure. Not everyone’s beliefs encourage love. Many bring hate and greed. They are destroying the veil, allowing pain and suffering where there should be joy. The joy you feel in your heart right now.”

“So my job is to look after a well?”

That should be easy enough. Not sure I need magic powers to do that, though.
