“Blegh! Cough! Cough!”

“Amli!” Chaika chided. “Try to be more ladylike, won’t you?”

“But this is too much! I know we’re in a hurry, but did we have to take the artery? Ugh, I feel like my lungs are coming up…”

“I’m sorry, Amli, but we’re almost at the node. Just bear with it…”

After leaving the wounded Cavillacan in the sanctuary of the kidney, Chaika became unwontedly concerned with pursuing Satahabaki, and so the four set off down Hokkaido’s bloodstream in the direction of this mysterious Ghost Hail Node.

When they arrived, Chaika took the lead, charging ahead while wiping the sweat off her brow. Milo caught up to her and, helping her along, took the opportunity to ask a question.

“Hey, Chaika? What kind of organ is this Ghost Hail Node? I’ve never heard of anything like it in Mollusca evolutus biology.”

“I’m not surprised you haven’t,” Chaika replied. “That’s because only Hokkaido has it.”

Chaika ran out of breath and fell to the floor. Milo helped her up onto his back, and the two set off again, with Chaika resuming her story.

“The Ghost Hail Node is where all the energy that moves Hokkaido is generated and stored,” she explained. “To Hokkaido, it is even more vital an organ than the bretika and the hartika.”

“More vital than the brain and the heart…?”

“So that’s what Shishi’s after?” Bisco piped up.

Chaika nodded. “You saw the garden they produced on the surface. The power of the Ghost Hail Node could allow them to create thousands of those. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what power they could wield if they absorbed all of Hokkaido’s energy… Wait, this is it, the entrance!”

At Chaika’s words, everyone stopped and looked around. The red floor was netted in white, fibrous material, like the surface of a cantaloupe, and all throughout the space echoed a soft heartbeat that caused the fibers to glow with a dazzling white light.

“It’s beautiful!” exclaimed Amli. “We’re deep in the bowels of some creature, and yet it’s almost…ghostly.”

“This must be the Ghost Hail Node! Wow, it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen—! No, nothing any doctor has ever seen! Isn’t that amazing, Bisco?”

“Don’t ask me. As far as I’m concerned, you seen one internal organ, you seen ’em all.”

“Oh, sorry. It’s just because I went to school…”

“How the hell do you always bring that up?!”

Leaving the boisterous trio behind, Chaika approached the entrance to the node and stepped inside. When she saw what awaited her there, she let out a pitiful cry and slumped helplessly to the ground.

“Chaika?! What happened?!”

The others ran over and followed Chaika’s trembling finger with their eyes…

“We’re too late,” she said. “The Benibishi…they’ve already been here!”

“M-Milo, look at that!!” Bisco shouted, pointing to a bright-white light emanating from deeper within the node. Its source was an enormous silvery mushroom, growing tall out of the organ floor. The mushroom itself seemed full of life, and as if to prove this, it shook and let out a cloud of white, hail-like spores from its cap with a Ba-fwoom!

“It’s the Ghost Hail mushroom,” said Chaika.
