I SAID I’D SCOPE out Clarence Bluff with Gabe and that’s exactly what I plan to do. I’m dressed and ready, sipping on a cup of herbal tea and gazing mindlessly out the kitchen window when I see Kane crossing the parking lot with purpose. Curious, my eyes track him past the last warehouse, to a black van parked in the shade of a giant elm.

“So, what’s on your agenda today?” Amanda puts out by way of greeting as she dives into a cupboard. “Following me again? It looks like rain, so you might want to bring an umbrella.”

I don’t take exception to her tongue-in-cheek attitude. I’ve kind of earned it.

“Actually, I’ve been thinking about that.” I half turn from the window to keep one eye on Kane—he’s at the van now, talking to the driver—and one eye on Amanda who’s pouring herself a bowl of cereal. “Jeremy would need a job, right? You don’t suppose Nial arranged a fake ID for him? Maybe Kane could ask his contact about it?”

“I’ve thought of that,” Amanda says. “Jeremy wouldn’t use his real name, though.”

“Oh, guess not.” Kane’s still talking to the driver through the rolled down window. Interesting. Do they know each other? “But...there’s not exactly a mass exodus of Silks escaping to the Free State and requiring fake IDs. If Kane’s contact keeps records, he may still be able to get you a list of possibilities.”

Amanda pulls out a chair at the table and sits. “And what will I have then? A list of fake names most likely registered to fake addresses.”

“It’s a long shot, Amanda, I get it, but then so is randomly scouring the streets...” I trail off, suspicious as well as curious now as I watch Kane converse with the driver.

Kane said he put feelers out to find the Wanted poster woman. What if this is a clandestine meeting, one of those feelers coming home to roost?

If it is, Kane didn’t bother mentioning it.

What are the chances he’ll share the details with me?

Slim to none.

“It was a suggestion,” I call out to Amanda as I hurry from the kitchen. “Just trying to be helpful.”

I fly out of the apartment and down the stairwell, but slow down at the bottom. I don’t want to spook our van informants. Instead, I lapse into a slow stroll across the parking lot, heading for the alley between the last two warehouses where I can wait to confront Kane when he’s done. I can’t stop myself from sending surreptitious glances that way, though. The van’s windshield is tinted. I can only make out the shadowy forms of a driver and a passenger riding shotgun.

The next glance I sneak catches Kane swirling about toward me.

“Senna!” He puts a hand up. Stop. Then that hand’s pushing air, pushing me to get back.

I stop dead, nerves firing on alert.

Something’s wrong.

Kane starts toward me in a flat-out run. “Go!”

Go where? I look around wildly. I’m closer to the warehouses than the bar.

The driver’s door pops open.
