Local Heroes

Throughout Southeast Asia, the tremendous efforts of the visa officers, primarily from Canada, Australia, and the United States, were made much easier by the intervention of local individuals who recognized the humanitarian crisis and took steps to alleviate the hardship and suffering of the refugees. There were many such people in each of the Southeast Asian reception countries. A handful went beyond anything that could have been expected in their efforts to ease the burdens of the refugees. These persons earned a special admiration from all the Canadian officers serving in the area.
