“Do you have to work tonight?” Logan says.

“No, but I do tomorrow. Why?”

“Just wondering...trying to figure out when I can take you out.”

I smile and sit down on the couch next to him. Logan puts his arm around me and pulls me close. It feels so nice. My whole body relaxes as he continues to hold me. Neither of us says a word or moves for the next ten minutes...we’re determined to make a lifetime of memories in however long we have together.

There’s a knock on the door and it pulls us back to reality. I look over at Logan and his eyes are locked on the front door.

“You expecting company?” he says, whispering to me.

“No...not that I know of.”

“Do you want me to see who it is?”

“No, I’ll get it.”

I stand up from the couch and slowly walk toward the front door as I try to not make a sound. I look through the peephole, quickly pull my head back, and tiptoe back over to the couch.

“It’s Amy.”

“What?”

“Yeah...she’s the one knocking on the door.”

“What should we do?” Logan says.

“I have no idea. She can’t drive...she got here somehow, but she’s alone. I should at least say hi and see what she wants.”

“Whatever you think.”

I bite my lip and nod my head. I’d prefer to not answer the door, but I feel guilty...the combination of her mom being sick and me dating her ex, it’s as if I’m obligated to at least talk to her for a few minutes.

“Go hide in the bedroom,” I say, “and if she comes in...hide in the closet. I’ll try to be quick.”

Logan nods, stands up from the couch and walks toward the bedroom as I make my way back over to the door. I look through the peephole again. Amy is already given up and walking back toward the street. It would be so easy for me to just not do anything and pretend I’m not home, but that’s not the kind of person, or friend, that I want to be. I open the door, slide out and pull it closed behind myself.

“Amy?” I say.

She turns around and looks at me.

“Hey.”

“Eeee!”

I run over, put my arms around her, and squeeze her tightly. Even though the whole Logan situation has complicated things, it’s still really good to see her.

“It’s so good to see you!” I say.

“I missed you, too.”

“What...what are you doing here?”

“I...well, you know about my mom….” Amy says, her voice trailing off as a worried look crosses her face.

“Yeah...I’m so sorry about that. How’s she doing?”

“I don’t know...okay...I guess. She just had her first treatment yesterday.”

I shake my head and shift my weight. I feel nervous standing out here on the street...almost like Amy is just going to blurt out at any moment that she knows something is going on between Logan and me.

“Crazy. Where is she getting treatment?”

“Here in Salem,” she says.

“That’s a bit of a drive.”

“Yeah...that’s kind of why I’m here.”

I glance back at my house and then look back at Amy.
