12. Every day is Day 1

This is what I learned in October.

I became so obsessed with reaching the elusive Day 365 that I never for one moment thought about any goals beyond my finish line. It was total tunnel vision: get to the end of the tunnel, then stop. In October, I learned that I was living in the past by counting the days I’d already run, and I was living in the future by focusing on Day 365. I was living everywhere but the present, which sadly drained that day of its potential. It was merely something to get through on my way to the finish line. My run streak taught me that in this journey of life, we need to occasionally glance in the rearview mirror for context and to be grateful for how far we’ve come, but ultimately, looking forwards while moving forwards is always a good idea.

It was a mistake for me to see Day 365 as the finish line, because as soon as I arrived at that destination, I felt the inevitable anticlimax and disappointment. The longer we work towards a goal, the more out of proportion our expectation tends to become, and the more disappointed we are with that one fleeting moment of completion. We need finish lines to motivate ourselves and to measure our progress against, but as soon as we cross them, let’s immediately turn them into start lines for the next exciting adventure. Every day is Day 1: make the most of it!
