Chapter Twenty-Six

I didn’t hear the dry crunch of old snow under my boots on my way to the dorm, but it seemed to glow in the broad circles cast by the light poles. My conversation with Noshi replayed in my mind, and I couldn’t stop smiling. He didn’t laugh at me. He encouraged me to ask questions.

Only when I stepped into our apartment and my gaze fell on my cluttered study console did my elation evaporate. Burn. I still have to figure out how I’m messing up those astrogation calculations.

A scan of our rooms confirmed Rinn wasn’t in. I plopped before my console and fished my link from the chest pocket of my flight suit where I kept the portrait of Derry. I drew out the small oval along with my link, warm and smooth as a brooding hen’s egg in my fingers.

I might never see her again, but that didn’t stop me from daydreaming. I lingered on memories of her encouraging words, melodious in my ears, and her brief kiss near my mouth when I told her good-bye. Her faint smile in the miniature painting seemed to say, Yew can do this, Kew.

I’d made a habit of setting the pendant on my console while I studied. Rinn had spotted it the first time and asked with a smile, “She is your charm for good luck?”

“Sort of.” I’d tried to be nonchalant, but I kept my vision on my display, hoping its illumination wouldn’t betray my heating ears.

I checked my link before plugging it into my console. A line of blue text glowed from the display.
