Chapter 11

Road Hazards

They had the buses on the road. The departure was a phyricc one. They had lost a man, and that death weighed on the entire group. The children and elderly had seen death up close and personal. That kind of experience undermines faith and confidence in people.

Yes, they had seen lots of death early in the Outbreak, but those in control had protected and insulated them from death. But once they had the buses ready, it should have been safe. And it was, until it wasn’t.

Few words were spoken as they put the miles behind them. The sun was now fully up, spilling its warming rays across the landscape, changing it from dark and foreboding to something almost hopeful.

Ellen had the lead and was keeping her speed down because this was Henry’s first time on the highway. It was also his first time driving over thirty miles per hour.

There were a lot of firsts for Henry the last few days. Some almost fun and some dreadful. For his part, he was white-knuckling the driving experience, his hands locked on the steering wheel at ten and two as prescribed. His attention was laser focused out the windshield and down the road ahead. There were times it seemed as if he didn’t even blink for miles.

With Mrs. Hatcher wounded, Doc Wilson was forced into being the co-pilot. It wasn’t a role he relished, but he was willing to step up for the good of the team. The experience for him took him back to a time when he had taught his sons to drive.

Every once in a while, Doc Wilson would offer up some sage advice or just plain tell Henry to slow down a little. “Remember, son, you can’t go any faster than the vehicle ahead of you.”

For the most part, Henry took the advice well. The one big thing he had going for him was that there was no one else on the road. There were a few occasions when they had to slow down to navigate around abandoned or wrecked vehicles.

A jackknifed semi-truck brought on some tense moments, as both Ellen and Henry had to drive slowly along the side of the road with the tires on the right side of the bus fully on the soft grass on the side of the road. More than a few passengers sent up prayers as the buses canted precariously to the right. Some of the riders even moved to the left side of the bus to put the weight on that side of the bus just in case. It wasn’t really necessary, but it gave them peace of mind.

In a world where almost everything was outside your control, peace of mind was about all you had control of.

They were in a long curve when Doc Wilson spotted the brake lights go bright red on the bus ahead of them.

“Slow it down, Henry. Your mother looks like she’s going to stop,” Doc Wilson said.

The passengers, who had been lulled into a quiet complacency, came out of the deep thoughts or partial dozes.
