Chapter 13
Friday
Aiden caught up with Megan the next morning in the midst of decorated Christmas trees, notebook in hand and camera around her neck.
"Well, it looks like you're getting in the holiday spirit. Anything I can do to help?"
Megan turned to him and then waved her hands towards the surrounding trees, shrugging her shoulders.
"I don't know how I'm going to pick a winner out of all of these trees. And the worst part is, Iâm acquainted with the people who have decorated them. Iâm partial to some of them even though I tried not to be."
"Well, I could give you my opinion of which one I like, but that doesn't mean it will meet all the criteria you set out in the rules of the contest."
Megan laughed along with him because she was sure exactly which tree he would like the most. It came from the local candy shop and instead of ornaments they had used all sorts of hard candies and assorted sweet treats to decorate the tree with. With Aiden's sweet tooth, it would be hard for him to not pick that tree. But she had come up with a plan, and that is why she had the camera with her. She handed Aiden the clipboard and told her sheâd be grateful for some help if he didn't mind.
"Just tell me what you want me to do. Iâm yours to command."
"We have 15 trees needing to be judged. What I would like you to do is write down the title and brief description I give you for each tree. I will take three pictures of each one to go with it. Then, what I thought I would do is take the pictures and descriptions over to Lucy's. There are two impartial parties over there, two little souls needing to be caught up in the spirit of Christmas, and this is as good a starting spot as any. I figured I would let them pick out the winners based on the pictures and descriptions."
Aiden gave Megan a quick kiss. He was falling for this woman hook, line, and sinker and it was little things like this making him fall even deeper. She was going out of her way to try to find something to make those two orphans feel safe and secure, and still get enjoyment from the simple holiday activities.
"That sounds like a perfect plan, Megan. Go ahead and start. I'm ready when you are."
The two of them worked steadily for the next 20 minutes, getting the descriptions down on paper and photos on the camera ready to be printed out. While they worked, Megan told him Paul had called to say he would work from home for the next couple of days. He had suggested when they were ready to leave they should take one of the cargo vans from the business. With the tinted front windows, it would be hard for anybody to tell who was driving.
When they had finished up with the Christmas tree task, Megan went to talk to Janice and get the keys for one of the vans.
