WHEN IT COMES to the phone, my mom sure has a knack for timing. Like when she calls me at noon on a Saturday and asks what I’m doing that night. I’m like, Mom, I haven’t even started my hangover yet, how could I possibly know what I’m doing tonight? Then there was the time when I was having a lot of trouble sleeping. My mom looked up some tips on the Internet and called me on her way to work to tell me about them—thereby waking me up at eight in the morning.

NOTHING KILLS GOOD news like having to tell the same story over the phone to your dad and then your mom consecutively. Because once you get to your mom, you’re already pissed that she didn’t pick up the other phone and listen to the story the first time so you give her the abridged version, which she can’t follow. Then you have to go all the way back to the beginning and remind her who each person in the story is. And by the time you’re through, you hope you never have good news again. But at least that’s better than when you tell your dad a story, he relays it your mom, and then she calls you the next day to ask about it and couldn’t have gotten the facts more wrong. It’s like a fucked up game of telephone but there are only three people in the chain.
